Concise Reflections on the Theotokos

Tonight was a beautiful Akathist service!

There is no one greater to ask for prayers than God’s holy mother, because she is uniquely loved by her son and our God.

Have you ever thought the special bond Christ has with His holy mother? She raised him. She fed him, changed him, taught him to walk, talk, and took Jesus to church.

Mary is God’s mother and we revere her greatly.

We have seen in the Bible how Christ harkens to His mother’s wishes. At the wedding at Cana, Mary asked Jesus to work a miracle, even before the time of Jesus’ ministry, but he fulfilled His mother’s request.

St. Elizabeth attested to the Theotokos that “all generations would call you blessed.”

Tonight, we honor St. Elizabeth’s foretelling by offering supplications to Mary and seeking her prayers so that the Lord may have mercy on us.

Here are the lyrics to the Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God:

“To thee the champion leader, do I offer thanks of victory. O Theotokos thou who has delivered me from terror, but as thou that has that power invincible. O Theotokos, thou alone can set me free. From all forms of danger free me and deliver me, that I may cry unto thee ‘Hail O bride without bridegroom!’”
